CARES Act grant money reported to you on box 6 of Form 1099-G is money that is entered under Other Common Income as Other 1099-G Income unless it is specifically excluded from taxability as PPP or EIDL advance funds.

From the left menu, select Federal, which will open to Income & Expenses. Scroll down to find the Other Common Income section and select Show More.

Select Other 1099-G Income and enter your details, identifying it as a taxable grant. This is appropriate for funds used personally.

Otherwise, you can report this as other income on Schedule C in the COMMON INCOME section under Other self-employed income, includes 1099-K, cash, and checks.

For more information about PPP or EIDL related to COVID-19, go to SBA Coronavirus Relief Options for more information.

Yes you do have to report it as business income.

If your grant was for study or research in the pursuit of a degree, the money used to pay your qualified tuition and related expenses isn’t taxable.

However, grant income is taxable if: The scholarship or grant was for general living expenses to a non-degree student.  This sounds like the case.
