To enter your Form 1099-MISC paid family leave information in TurboTax Online:

  1. Open TurboTax Online
  2. Select  Tax Home in the left pane
  3. Select the dropdown to the right of Wages & Income
  4. Select  Pick up where you left off, Review/Edit or the edit pencil
  5. On the Great! We've got your income info page, select the dropdown to the right of Other Common Income -- Tax refunds, 1099-G, 1099-NEC, 1099-MISC, 1099-K
  6. Select Start to the right of Form 1099-MISC
  7. Select Yes on the Did you get a 1099-MISC? page
  8. On thEnter the information from your 1099-MISC on the Let's enter the income from your 1099-MISC page, then select Continue
  9. On the Describe the reason for this 1099-MISC screen, enter Paid Family Leave, then select  Continue
  10. On the Do one of these uncommon situations apply? screen, select the bullet next to None of these apply, then select Continue
  11. On the Did the Paid Family Leave involve work that's like [your] main job? page, select the bullet next to No, it didn't involve work like [your] main job, then select Continue
  12. On the How often did [you] get income for Paid Family Leave? page, answer appropriately, then select Continue
  13. On the Did the Paid Family Leave involve an intent to earn money? page, select the bullet next to No, it didn't involve an intent to earn money.  This indicates to the program that this wasn't self-employment income, so self-employment tax won't be triggered.  Select Continue
  14. On the Your 1099-MISC summary page, select Done, unless you have more Forms 1099-MISC to enter

If the TurboTax Online navigation described above doesn't look like what you're experiencing, see the TurboTax Help article Why does the TurboTax navigation menu look different for me?.

During the 1099-MISC entry and Q&A process I do not receive a prompt to complete the question addressed in line 13 as follows:

"On the Did the Paid Family Leave involve an intent to earn money? page, select the bullet next to No, it didn't involve an intent to earn money.  This indicates to the program that this wasn't self-employment income, so self-employment tax won't be triggered.  Select Continue"

Upon completion of the remaining Q&A, TurboTax automatically adds the 1099-MISC information for Paid Family Medical Leave (Oregon) into the business income section and requires me to complete entry of independent business data, including the name, address, etc. etc., which then triggers a significant reduction of my income tax returns, both state and federal. I discussed this with a tax accountant, and was told that this is a problem with TurboTax software's handling of this particular type of 1099-MISC income that also occurred with the 2023 TurboTax software and has not been corrected.

There is a prompt to select that the 1099-MISC did not involve work.  Here are the steps.  I would suggest deleting the 1099-MISC and starting over if you do not see the same prompts.

Here is how to report the 1099-MISC in TurboTax Online:

  • Navigate to Federal > Wages & Income > Other Common Income> Form 1099-MISC> Start or Revisit
  • Enter the 1099-MISC as printed, Continue
  • Describe the reason for this 1099-MISC: FMLA or similar
  • Select None of these uncommon situations apply, then continue
  • Select No, it didn’t involve work that's like your main job and continue
  • The next screen asks how often you get income from FMLA.  Select only the year of this specific 1099-MISC, 2024.

This right here!

I have been search for answers and finally came across this and it helped me alot! The biggest part that was hanging me up was the last part where it asked if there was intent to earn. Obviously I expected to earn while on leave for the birth of my child but not as if I was working and if I put yes it would have me add more things later like as it were for a job. If I put no without knowing, it accepted it but I didn't know the reasoning behind it and wanted to make sure everything was going to be fine.

The 1099-G my wife got from the state was alot easier to enter than this one from a private insurance company so thank you again for the help in entering this correctly.
