Q5: How do I renew an expiring ITIN?
A5: To renew an expiring ITIN, you must submit a completed Form W-7, Application for IRS Individual Taxpayer Identification Number, along with your valid supporting original or certified copies by the issuing agency, identification documents and any other required attachments. Applicants must also select the appropriate reason for needing the ITIN, as outlined in the Form W-7/W-7(SP) instructions. No tax return is required for a renewal application. Mail the application to Internal Revenue Service, ITIN Operation,   P. O. Box 149342, Austin, TX 78714-9342. See Q&A 13 for information if you do not want to mail documents to the IRS.

Hi,

Who can issue the certified copies of the originals for renewing ITIN? Can I get them from any agency or only from the listed agencies on the IRS website? BTW, should the same agency have to file the ITIN renewal application too, or just get the certified copies from them and I can then file the ITIN renewal by myself?

"Can I get them from any agency or only from the listed agencies on the IRS website?" Unless I misunderstand you, you get the certified copies from the agency that issued the original documents.

Perhaps you are referring to Certified Acceptance Agents or an IRS Taxpayer Assistance Center? It is convenient taking your W-7 and certified copies to either one, because that way, you don't have to mail your passport and other important documents and be without them for weeks.

Note that some CAAs may expect to file your 1040 at the same time (which may be OK with you).

Use this IRS webpage to see if there is a CAA or IRS Taxpayer Assistance center near you.
