When to itemize your deductions instead of taking the standard deduction?

I believe it will be move beneficial for my husband and I to itemize our deductions this year since we have $20k+ in medical expenses. What other expenses can we include?

Hello,

The standard deduction for 2022 taxes is $25,900

In order for itemizing deductions you would need to excedd that amount.

To Itemize you  can take:

  • Mortgage interest you pay on up to two homes
  • Your state and local income or sales taxes
  • Property taxes
  • Medical and dental expenses that exceed 7.5% of your adjusted gross income
  • Charitable donations

You can enter your itemized deductions into TurboTax and the program will let you know if the standard deduction or itemized deductions is more beneficial to you to take.

You can take a look at Schedule A to see all the categories, but home mortgage interest and property taxes are included as well as chitable donations. You won't get credit for the entire $20,000 as there is a 7.5% floor for medical expenses.
