When they ask about my occupation are they asking about currently or last year?

I assume that the "they" you are talking about is TurboTax. TurboTax is asking for your occupation in the year that you are filing your tax return for. If you are now working on your 2021 tax return, enter your occupation in 2021.

Don't spend a lot of time worrying about what occupation to enter. It doesn't affect your taxes.

IRS Form 1040 instructions is mute on Occupation(s). Please refer to below link. I would lean towards the occupations pertaining to tax year reported, in this case, 2021.
