When I try to e-file, I get an error saying validation failed b/c an update is available for my program. When I check for updates, there are none. Why can't I e-file?

I have same issue with TTax Premier and state IL & mac. All updates done. Mac OS updates done. Also re-installed & rebooted multiple times. I filed 1 set fine over a week ago, then had this start for my additional e-file submissions 2/15/20 - 2/16 & 2/17.

I just checked for updates again (about noon PT, 2/17/20) and saw there was a new one available.  After installing it, I was able to e-file both federal and state with no problems.

Can you post what version you're on or the about page so we can compare.  I didn't have an update available as of 7PM EST 2/17/20.  Running mac.

TurboTax for Mac automatically adds the current tax form updates whenever you select Check for Updates from the TurboTax menu. This creates the illusion that updates are available even if you're on the latest release.

If you want to make sure you're up-to-date, quit and reopen TurboTax. If you're not on the latest release, the program will automatically download it.

If that doesn't work, you can force a download of the most recent update. This applies to the TurboTax for Mac CD/Download and for the TurboTax 2015 app available in iTunes.

  1. Open TurboTax and select the TurboTax menu.
  2. On your keyboard, hold down the Option key.
  3. This will change the Check for Updates menu option to Download Latest Updates...
  4. Selecting this option will force the most recent update for TurboTax to download and install.

I had to do the forced download method.

When I did the standard Check for Updates, it would say the software was up to date.

Once the software was downloaded and installed I was able to e-file both Federal and state returns.

I still have this problem on my Mac as well (Feb 17 through ??). Steps that didn't help: checked for updates, opt-loaded updates ("Up to date"), uninstalled and reinstalled according to Intuit's directions, got on the phone with Intuit Support (no new suggestions), tried and retried repeatedly.

We're the same except for the state. I tried everything again tonight with no luck. Application 2019.r14.032.

@DonBronBronito the shut down computer, shut down router, shut down modem, and turn back on in reverse order worked for me.

I did reboot the router. Then after powering the computer back up there was an update available. After installing I was able to transmit properly.

Have you tried to disable your virus protection before uninstalling and reinstalling the TurboTax software? This has worked for many people who are having the same problem.

Resolved for me! 2/20/2020 2:17pm PST This is the third day and finally an update was available when I relaunched TurboTax (first Mac update since trying and failing to efile 2/17) "Critical update available..." EURIKA! After installing the update and relaunching TurboTax I "continued" to "Ready to file you return" and the validation finally worked and the efile succeeded. I was very close to giving up and snail-mailing but I was hoping that an actual corrective update was in the works. It appears it was!

Hi Dawn,

I am using Home & Biz.  I uninstalled and reinstalled TurboTax but that didn't help.  I still get the circular reference and cannot transmit returns.

I tried to transmit the Federal return separately and that worked.  However, when I tried to transmit the Illinois state return, that came back with the message about needing to be updated.  So apparently there is some issue with not being able to transmit the Illinois return.

Does this lend any additional perspective to the potential solution?  Do you recommend that I just send the IL state return via mail, or should I wait for a possible solution?  I have already paid the $19.99 plus tax to file my IL return electronically.
