when I clicked "import expense transactions" and "ass expenses for this work", it kept directing me to choose more categories instead of connecting to my bank account

When you select Import Expense Transactions, the next screen should be Connect My Accounts.

 

If you're not seeing this, try closing TurboTax, clear your Cache and Cookies and return to that section.
