What should one write in the SSN section of the state return when a person is applying/renewing an ITIN?

I understand W-7 form gets sent to the IRS only and not to the state. Now, what should be included in the SSN section of the state return?

Obviously, in this section there should be a dummy SSN number already in place. So can one write something like: "Applied for" the same as on the federal return?

What about when someone is renewing their ITIN? what should be written in the SSN section of the state return?

something like: "Renewing" or can one just leave this section with the expired ITIN number?

Make sure you white out the dummy SSN.

Yes, write "ITIN Applied for" .  For the expired ITIN, whether you enter the expired number in the state return or enter ITIN applied for , you still will receive a letter from the state requesting the correct information.  Hopefully by then you will have received the updated ITIN.
