What should I do if there is no Locality name listed on my W-2 ?

Box 20 is blank on my W-2 and it wont allow me to leave it blank.

Yes, if you enter anything in boxes 18, 19 and 20 of Form W-2, the program will make you fill in all three. 

 

If box 19 is blank or zero on your W-2 form, you should leave boxes 18, 19 and 20 blank. 

 

If you have a number greater than zero in box 19, and no locality name was provided in box 20, you need to contact your employer to find out the name of the locality. 

 

To review your W2 forms:

 

  1. Select Federal on the left side menu.
  2. Select Wages & Income.
  3. Click Edit to the right of Job (W2).
  4. Click Edit to the right of your W2 entry.
  5. Click Continue.
  6. Scroll to the bottom and either complete boxes 18, 19 and 20, or delete the information completely if box 19 is 0.
  7. Click Continue to save your changes.

In some states, cities, counties and school districts have an income tax, in addition to the state.  If you work in a city with a tax, your employer is required to withhold city tax.  In most cases, you don't need to file a city tax return (they already got their money).  If you itemized deductions, on the federal, the box 19 amount is usually deductible.  You pay stubs may have the name of the city.

 

Some times, you employer might withhold tax for you residence city (this is less likely than work city withholding).
