What is deadline to e-file 2021 tax year returns using TurboTax?

Hello, I still need to e-file a tax return for tax year 2021. I believe the deadline is 17 October 2022. Can you please confirm until what date/time I can e-file using desktop TurboTax? And, if rejected for some reason, would I be able to resubmit after the deadline? Thank you!

You have until 11:59pm local time on October 17, 2022 to e-file the 2021 tax return.

If the tax return is rejected TurboTax normally gives at least 5 days after rejection to e-file the corrected tax return.  After that extended date the 2021 tax return can only be printed and mailed.

The TurboTax online editions are normally available until the end of October so they can be used to print the 2021 tax return.

Those using the desktop software need to run their update....again.

Ther was a 15 vs 17 date issue that was fixed on 16 October, with an emergency software update.

Turbotax will not allow e-file after Oct 15, 2022 for 2021 tax returns.

This is inconsistent with the IRS allowing e-filing thru Oct 17, 2022

Don't know why but very frustrating!

FYI, I was just successful in e-filing federal and state for 2021 tax returns so TurboTax allowed it today, on 10/17/2022. Thank you!

The IRS is accepting electronic tax returns until November 17th.  I refuse to send a paper return when my return can be e-filed. I'm going to finally have to part ways with TurboTax after being a loyal customer for at least 15 years.

@RocknCJ The IRS will accept e-files from the Free File site to November 17.

Use this IRS site for other ways to file for free.  There are 8  free software versions available from the IRS Free File site

"Nov 15th - All customers will be turned away for TY21"

Does that mean I can still e-file 2021 return if I download TT Desktop software until November 14th?? Hesitant to download the software to find out I will be forced to mail the return. If I cannot e-file since we are past the 10/17 deadline, I will defer to using one of the IRS free file as I have a simple return with just a W-2 to assist my friend in filing.

I've been trying to find this specific answer but for whatever reason this information isn't readily available.

A 2021 tax return using TurboTax can no longer be e-filed.  The 2021 tax return can only be printed and mailed.

You can see if one of the other free file programs are able to e-file the 2021 tax return.  Go to this IRS website for the free file programs - https://apps.irs.gov/app/freeFile/browse-all-offers/

Turbo Tax filed an extension for me for 2021 taxes. Due to hurricane Ian, I was unable to complete my return by Oct 17, 2022. I now want to go back and finish my return but I can not get to my return. I spent two hours with a Turbo Tax specialist and she was unable to find my partially completed 2021 tax return nor could she help look at my partially completed return. On April 18, 2022 I paid $199 to Turbo Tax for my 2021 return. Please tell me what I need to do to complete my 2021 return.

You have to sign onto your 2021 online account using the exact same user ID you used to create the 2021 online account.

Close all TurboTax windows on your web browser (including this one).  Copy and paste the account recovery website link onto a new web browser window and run the tool.

Use this TurboTax account recovery website to get a list of all the user ID's for an email address.  Run the tool against any email addresses you may have used - https://myturbotax.intuit.com/account-recovery

If none of the user ID's received will access your 2021 account, then use the option shown in blue on the account recovery website, "Try something else"

If you used the desktop CD/Download editions installed on your computer, the only copy of your tax data file and any PDF's will be on the computer where the return was created.  TurboTax does not store online any returns completed using the desktop editions.

To access your current or prior year tax returns sign onto the TurboTax website with the User ID you used to create the account - https://myturbotax.intuit.com/

When you land on the screen for the 2021 online return you will be asked to download the 2021 tax data file and to purchase and download one of the 2021 TurboTax desktop editions so that you can continue and file the 2021 return.  A 2021 tax return can only be printed and mailed, it can no longer be e-filed using TurboTax.

This is the screen you will land on when you have signed onto your 2021 online account -
