If a direct deposit is rejected by the bank then the refund is sent back to the IRS for a federal tax refund or to the State for a State tax refund. The IRS or State will then send you a refund check in the mail to the address entered on your federal or state tax return. This process can take anywhere from two to eight weeks after the refund is rejected.
