What does it mean on my 2022 W2 Box 12 to have a code AA21? Can I add the sum of it and the regular AA code?

For Form W-2, Box 12 AA is your 2022 value and  AA21 is your 2021 value. You make wish to check your 2021 Form W-2 and verify that is correct.

So how do I interpret this? If AA21 is the same on my Box 12, AA from 2021 do I do nothing with it? I’m just curious because there is no option for AA21 on my filing and it’s causing an error if I report AA21 as a standard AA.

Yes, you will get an error code if you make two box 12 entries with AA. To avoid this and report the amount of your Roth 401(K) contributions correctly, add the two amounts together and make one AA entry for the total.

That's not the case here.  2022 W2, box 12, line AA21 amount does not match 2021 W2, box 12, line AA amount.

That suggests this answer is not generally correct.

What's the logic of reporting a 2021 amount on a 2022 return?

When I'm just about done, I'm going to compare results reporting only the amount on line AA with results if I add the amounts on lines AA and AA21 and report that in line AA on turbotax.

Since Roth contributions are after-tax, how would they affect tax due?

This may not be true for everybody, but we went back to 2021 pay stubs and figured out that AA21 on 2022 W2 is the difference between total 2021 contributions and what was reported on 2021 W2.

IOW, AA21 on 2022 W2 was unreported 2021 contributions.

So I added lines for AA and AA21 and entered that into TTax as AA.
