A Control Number (Box D) is used by many payroll departments to uniquely identify a W-2 in their system. If your W-2 doesn't have one, it's no big deal – you can simply leave it blank.

TurboTax responds:

A value is required

@joemark711

Are you trying to auto-import the W-2? You'll need a control number to import the W-2.

But just leave the field blank if you are entering the W-2 by hand.

If you see that the field is blank but you are still getting the error message, then delete the W-2 and re-add it manually.

I can't leave it blank it requires a value and mine doesn't have one so now I can't do my taxes.

The Control Number is not a required field.
