What do I need to mail with the state tax return form?

I used Turbotax to prepare my CA and NY state tax return this year. However, for some reason, I can not use the e-file, so I have to print and mail my forms.

Along with my CA tax return forms, Turbotax generates "2021 California Tax Return Attachment", including Form 1040, Schedule D, Form 8949, Form 8889. However, the mailing instruction says,

"Attach the following to your California tax return:
- a copy of your federal return
- all Form(s) W-2 and W-2G. Also attach any 592-B, 593, and 1099s that have California withholding to the front of your return."

I understand that federal return and W2 should be attached to the CA tax return form, but do I still need to mail the Schedule D, Form 8889, or Form 8949?

The same problem applies to my NY tax return, where the "2021 New York Tax Return Attachment" also includes my CA tax return forms. However, the instruction says "Do not attach copies of federal Form(s) W-2 to your tax return. New York form(s) IT-2, 'Summary of W-2 Statements' are to be attached to your tax return instead. These form(s) (when required) are automatically generated using W-2 data entered in your federal tax return." Do I need to mail the CA tax forms to the NY tax office?

Thanks for your help in advance.

Are you filing as a resident, nonresident or part-year resident of each state?

There may be filing requirement differences, depending on which form you’re filing for each.

You can find attachment requirements via New York’s Commonly used income tax forms and instructions and California’s Forms and Publications pages.
