W4

Recently got married - wanting to update our W4s so we don’t owe at the end of the year. We have 2 dependents, one of us does make more throughout the year. Currently one of us is single 0 and the other is single 3.

The best way to fill out the current version of the W-4 is to use the TurboTax W-4 Calculator or the IRS Tax Withholding Estimator. Both of these tools will ask you for information from your most recent pay stubs (to get year-to-date information) as well as what you expect to happen with your paychecks for the rest of the year.

You'll enter information for both jobs, the number of dependents that you have, whether you have any other income or deductions, etc. Then the program will provide you with the information necessary to fill out the W-4s for each job -- or even a PDF version that you can give to your employer.

The current version of the W-4 started in 2020 and doesn't really use the number of exemptions any more -- like it did for years. It's a very different form than what you may remember -- there is no more "Single 0" or "Single 3".

Either of those calculators will help you get to the best answer for you, though.

Also -- make sure to RE-DO your W-4 calculations for 2025. This year has been a year of changes, so there may be more (or less) withholding necessary for the second half of the year to make up for the first half. Re-do the forms for 2025 to get a "normal" amount calculation.
