W2 entered incorrectly.

There was a mistake in entering the name on Turbotax W2 form input. There should have been a W2 for each married person but both W2 input forms had the same name.  This did not effect return for Federal tax but did  result  in the loss of the married couples credit on State tax return.

If you filed your return with both W-2 forms attributed to the same person, you can correct it by filing an amendment.

It is best to wait until your original tax return is processed before you amend your tax return. That means waiting until after you receive your refund, or at least three weeks if you owe.

This is how start an amendment in Turbo Tax:

  1. Sign in to TurboTax using the same account you used to file your taxes.
  2. On the home screen, scroll down to Your tax returns & documents and select 2022.
  3. Select Amend (change) return, then Amend using TurboTax Online.
  4. The refund will change to $0, don't worry this is normal.
  5. On the screen OK, let's get a kickstart on your amended return, select W-2 form as  reason you're amending and Continue.
  6. On the W-2 summary, select Edit to the right of the W-2 that needs the corrections.
  7. Change the owner of the W-2 on the next screen.
  8. If this change does not affect you federal balance due or refund, you don't have to file your federal amendment.
  9. Continue into the State section
  10. Continue through the screens and carefully answer the remaining questions to finish amending your return

If you have already filed the after the state fully processed the return you can amend it.  The indication of whose form belongs to whom is a data entry made by the user in each income entry section... return to the W-2 entry section to make the correction.

When you file a joint return using TurboTax, all the information flows from the federal to the state return.  Each income screen in federal has a spot with each spouse's name so that you can enter the income under the correct spouse.  If you miss that and enter it incorrectly under only one spouse, that is a user error.   It may not have affected your federal refund, but as you can see, it affected your state.   And....you may need to check to see if it also affected the amount of Social Security withheld it affected for only one of you.   Entering all of the SS withheld under only one of your names on federal can cause a problem for you if the amount you ascribed to only one person exceeds the maximum for the year.  It can cause an incorrect amount of "excess Social Security" to be added to your refund....and when the IRS catches it, they will seek repayment with interest from you.

Look at the amounts you entered for 2022 from box 4 of those W-2's---if those amounts added together for one person are over $9114.00  you will have that problem too, but not until the IRS catches it about a year from now.

You will need to amend your return if it was accepted to correct the way the information was entered for the W-2's.    Amend your state too, and that should fix the credit you missed on the state return.
