W2 box 14 codes for Septa railroad employee return

There's two new codes in box 14 for the W2 for this return this year.

Septa regional rail worker.

RRMD?  Is there a correct code for that in the drop down?

WAGES -- same as box 1 wages?  Is there a box 14 code for WAGES?

What does TT do with these codes?  Or are the codes for IRS use?

What happens if you select code "other" or leave the code blank?

And why list WAGES in box 14?  It's already listed in box 1!

Yes, box 14 is used for many things.  They are used for state and local returns most often, but will also be used for federal purposes if they are deductible expenses, which most common a state or local tax such as an employee unemployment tax (some states have this). Fringe benefits can also be entered into box 14 and you can see all of the items in the instructions. Most often it's not really used on the tax return.

For the WAGES you should select  'Railroad Retirement Compensation', then add another box 14 item and review the other Railroad categories for the RRMD, if you're not sure you can select 'Other (not classified)'.

Or if you could clarify what the RRMD is, post a note here and we can direct you further.

You can safely assign it to 'Other (not classified)' and finish your return.

Not sure at all what RRMD is!  The RR is for railroad.  The RRMD amount is 1177.
