W-4 for correct tax withholding

Hello,

Last tax year, my husband and I owed on our taxes.  That has never happened to us before and we want to make sure the correct amount is being withheld.   We both work and have one dependent.  On my husband's W-4 we have box c checked for step 1 & 2.  My husband has the higher paying job, so we have $2000 on step 3 for him.  This step has 0 for me.  Will the correct amount now be withheld from our pay checks, or do we need to have extra withheld?  If so, how do we calculate that?  I am worried that something is still wrong because my husband currently has less taxes being taken out of his check than I do.

Thanks.

ya sorry I can't answer your question, because we are having the same issue. I don't know what is going on this year. But they are not holding out any federal taxes for either myself or my wife. Now they only hold out the amount I updated, step 4 c extra withholding. Something weird is happening though.

Hello @msgier11

Since your husband is claiming $2,000 in box 3 - that might be an indication why he has less taken our of his checks.

To ensure your tax withheld is appropriate for your tax situation, you can divide the amount you usually pay in federal taxes by the number of paychecks you receive in a year and compare it to the withholding from your and your spouses paystubs to find out if your estimates are accurate. You can always made an adjustment in box 4c for extra withholding to avoid balance due at the end of the year.

You and your spouse can update your W-4 form anytime during the year. Just remember, adjustments made later in the year will have less impact on your taxes for that year.

Hope this helps!

Please use this W-4 Calculator for you and your spouse to ensure your W-4 forms are filled out correctly. You can always have extra withholding taken out by filling out box 4c to ensure your estimates are accurate and you don't end up with a balance due at the end of the year.

Hope this helps!

I know how to fill out a W-4, I've never had any issues like this year, I am filling them out correctly and they are still not holding out any federal other than the extra withholding I added to my wife's w-4. This "chat" "messaging" back and forth is really no help. Talking with someone over phone or video chat would be so much faster and simpler
