VA taxes on Military Retirement

I’m retired military living in VA for all of 2024. When I use Premier TurboTax it fails to account for the $30,000 subtraction for military retired pay which would go on the 2024 760CG Line 7. There is no way to signify military retirement pay on the 1099-R income input or anywhere on the VA tax calculations that I could find. I’ve updated the software several times. How can I get TurboTax Premier to account for the VA state income tax subtraction of $30,000 of military retirement pay?

Follow these steps:

  1. Open your VA return
  2. Continue through to Here's the income that Virginia handles differently.
  3. Locate Military section
  4. Select Military Benefits Subtraction
  5. Enter military benefits that qualify for reduction
  6. Your military benefits subtraction, continue

Note: This subtraction is not allowed if a credit, exemption, subtraction, or deduction is claimed for the same income pursuant to any other provision of Virginia or federal law.
