Using e-signature to print tax forms for submission

Intend to print and file returns by mail.  Filing status is married filing jointly, but spouse is currently located in a different state.  Need to understand protocol to use e-signature for filing.  After I complete the form, do I

  1. Add my electronic signature to PDF file and send to spouse for signature?  Then print and mail form with both electronic signature?  OR
  2. Send unsigned PDF file to spouse for e-signature; upon return, print e-signed form, then sign printed form for submission?

Are both ways acceptable?

If you are filling by mail the e-signature should not be used.

  • You must physically sign the return.
  • A mailed return without a physical signature will not be processed
  • Your spouse must physically sign it also.

Understood and thank you.  I will make sure we both sign the printed form.

I am therefore curious to know under what circumstances is a form, completed with e-signatures, acceptable for filing?

When it is electronically filed.
