Used TurboTax while married then using TurboTax in the year after divorce.

As a married couple we have used TurboTax to file our tax returns since married. This year (2023) we will be divorced before fining our individual 1040 returns in 2024. One of us owns a rental property individually. TurboTax has been calculating the mortgage loan points, depreciation, and loss carryforward on the rental property since it was purchased. How do we use TurboTax to file separately for 2023?

I am thinking that after importing the return into the 2023 software I delete my spouse and all activities  attributed, and delete the child (we have two) that I don't get credit for. Does this make sense or is there a better way?

You will be filing as Head of Household assuming you qualify with the one child. It will be cleaner for you to start a return from scratch rather than try to manipulate the previous one.

If using Turbotax online, it is recommended to create a new account, and manually type in any information that needs to be carried over.  It is very difficult to remove the former spouse completely from the tax file, because they may be listed on internal worksheets that are not accessible or editable by the user.

If using Turbotax installed on your own computer, you might have more success by importing the old data file and deleting the former spouse, because you will be able to directly few and edit all the program worksheets. However, it is still recommended to start from scratch.

If you used Turbo Tax last year you should start a brand new account for yourself and not transfer from last year. Online is only good for 1 return. But you can use the same email address for 5 accounts. How to start another return in the Online version
