Unwanted fees it supposed to be free.

I picked the option to do my taxes for free when I signed up to do TurboTax  but I was charged two different fees when filing my taxes. Why and what are these fees for?

It depends.

Did you use the online software?

There are different versions of the online software.

It's possible you had items that were not a part of the Free version of the software.  The Free software only supports wages from a W-2 Form and the Earned Income Credit.

Any other source documents you had entered would require you to upgrade to generate the forms needed to file a complete return.

Forms included in TurboTax products

Yea I only had one W-2 form. With the online version I went to sign back in the second time after finally getting my AGI it would not let me go on to the next page without upgrading to the deluxe version. Then at the last minute it added something else for 50 some odd dollars. This upgrade did not come up before. I click the free version. TurboTax is making me pay for something I don't want or need. Is it because I did my taxes late? I thought the date was extended until July.

If you have not paid for the online edition you are using, have not filed your tax return or registered the Free edition, then you can clear your return and start over with a lower priced edition. Click on Tax Tools on the left side of the program screen while working on the 2019 online tax return. Click on Clear & Start Over.

OR -

Use the TurboTax Free File program if you are eligible - https://freefile.intuit.com/
If you are eligible you can use the TurboTax Free File Program which is free to file both a federal and state tax return. The Free File Program edition is a full featured personal tax program and on a separate website from the TurboTax online editions.

To qualify for free 2019 federal and state tax returns with the Free File Program, you'll need to meet at least one of these requirements:

  • A maximum 2019 adjusted gross income (AGI) of $36,000; or
  • You qualify for the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC); or
  • You served as active duty military (including Reservists and National Guard) with a maximum 2019 AGI of $69,000 (you'll also need a military-issued W-2).

I did click the free verison. I never had trouble with TurboTax until this year. I have paid the amount already. I wasn't aware that I could start over. I was trying to call customer service to help me out. No answer. This service popped up after I completed my information and paid the unnecessary fee. Is there a way I could cancel after I've been approved?

If you have filed the tax return then it cannot be canceled.  Nor can you get a refund of the TurboTax online account fees once the tax return was filed.

However, if you speak with TurboTax support they may make an exception, but that is wholly up to TurboTax support.

TurboTax support is open from 5am to 5pm Pacific time, Monday thru Friday.

To contact TurboTax customer service/support use their contact website during business hours. If the problem concerns any type of refund for fees, use the key words billing issues and do Not use the word Refund or you will get a phone number for tax refunds.
