Unnecessary states can't be removed from desktop

I can't delete DC and MA state tax returns for my daughter's return who lives in NY.  I downloaded NY, thought I removed DC.  I use MA for the rest of the family, which was the free download.  When I try and file the returns for fed and NY, it wants to file 4 returns including MA and DC, which aren't necessary.  When I click on remove state in the program, only NY pops up.  Very frustrating!  Anyone know a trick for this?  I would prefer not to start a new return for her and lose history.

@jgdemeritt Can you clarify? You said when you remove the DC and MA, only NY pops up- which it seems that you want to file the federal and New York for your daughter.

I don't think this applies to you but may help.

This is for state programs you have downloaded not actual state tax returns. You can not remove the program. See this post,

If you used a state and don't need it anymore the state program is still on your computer and will show up and be updated when you run updates. You don't have to use it or pay for it.

One user said…… The list of states that you used is stored on your computer. When you get a new computer it starts over with an empty list. Getting a new computer is the only way I know of to get rid of the unwanted states.
