Under Dependents, my son (born 2019) is showing as "other" when my older 2 children show as getting the child tax credit. How would I fix this?

He was born July 2019, so on that return we put 5 months he was living with us. We never received stimulus for him (which I thought we could when we file), however I went through the electronic file and didn't notice until I printed a copy of the return that it has him marked as "other dependent" and my 2 older children marked as received the child tax credit. Not sure how to go about fixing this.

For your 2019 tax return, your child would be considered to have lived with you for twelve months or ""the whole year"" in the year born. This is mentioned in TurboTax when you enter the dependent, so it looks like the problem is you entered 5 months instead of the whole year.

If you filed your tax return already, you will have to wait until the IRS processes your refund before you can file an amended return to correct your son's dependent status. You can file the amended return for no additional fee in TurboTax.

For 2020, you must also indicate how many months he lived with you, as you do with all dependents.

When you prepare your tax return for 2020 in TurboTax, you will be prompted to enter how much you received for your stimulus and then the program will calculate the amount of stimulus due you based on your income, number of dependents and payments already received. If any additional stimulus is due you, it will be used to reduce your 2020 income tax liability, and the balance will be refunded to you.

You will see the options when you are done entering your tax information and proceed to the review process.

You can file a tax return in 2020 to get your stimulus check, even if you aren't required to otherwise.

Sounds like you need to amend your 2019 return and include him for the WHOLE YEAR.  Even if the baby was born on Dec 31 you get to say he lived with you the WHOLE YEAR.

Did you file 2020?  Did you get the Child Tax Credit for him?  If your 2020 return gets accepted you might need to amend 2020 also.

Thank you so much for clearing that up. I was confused because the paper form reads "You can't claim the EIC for a child who didn't live with you for more than half of the year". I foolishly just clicked "same" under the children's info since it didn't change and never thought to adjust the months lived with us for the baby.

We will be amending the 2019, now that I see we can mark him for the whole year.  Since I didn't notice the listing was wrong until we printed the completed 2020 return, I'll need to amend that as well when the form becomes available.
