TurboTax won't let me change the answer to the Homebuyer Credit. It keeps getting rejected no matter how I change it. help!

I need to choose "yes, but its not longer my main home" but it automatically keeps choosing "no" for me. I checked "yes but no longer" when I filed then got a rejection email and saw it switched to "no." I did fix my return and it won't let me change it.

If you stopped using it prior to 1/1/18 then you had to deal with this in a prior tax year...you have nothing to report in 2018 .

as of 11/2016 the home was not our main home. I had no issues last year when filing. I chose the "yes but no longer..." option and continued the process. This year it automatically changed it to "no" and now turbo tax is rejecting it stating that we have to have a repayment.

OK ... first of all stop going into this section ... you dealt with this back on the 2016 return so you do not have an active situation that requires the 5405 any longer.

Next try deleting the form ...

1.Open your return in TurboTax Online, if you're not already signed in.
2.Click My Account (top of screen)
3.Click Tools
4.Under Other helpful link….. click Delete a form
5.Click Delete next to the form you want to Delete

I understand what you're saying, however, there isn't a form5405 to delete.

If you are using the downloaded version switch to the FORMS mode and look for the 5405 worksheet ... see if you can make the change there ... if not call TT support for assistance.

See this TurboTax support FAQ for a contact link and hours of operation -https://ttlc.intuit.com/questions/1899263-what-is-the-turbotax-phone-number

Try to delete the form and then re-enter. Here are the steps:

In TurboTax window,

 • Open up your tax return if you have not already done so.
 • At the right upper corner, select Forms mode
 • In the Forms mode, the left side shows a list of all the generated forms, locate and click on form 5405
 • At the bottom of that form, click Delete Form

If you are using the online edition, follow these steps:

 • Sign in to your account, select Pick up where you left off
 • To your left, Select Tax Tools/drop-down menu
 • Select Tools
 • Under Other helpful links, choose to Delete a form
 • Select Delete next to Form 5405 and Continue with My Return to proceed

This bug still exists. Form 5405 isn't in "Delete a Form" and the questionnaire that creates it is complete, although it auto-changes the "Yes" to "No" every time I go through it. This is a BUG. Kill this BUG.

Did you ever figure a way around this? I am stuck too and paid these Turbotax clowns 200 bucks and now i have to manually file the return if there is no fix.

Has anyone figured this out???? I have spent no less than 3 hours attempting to rectify this with Turbotax "experts". They couldn't figure it out (experts, IT, and supervisors) and then said I needed to re-file per mail (and start all over again). I decided that I am going to go with another service, but now I have to issue a refund which will take 5-7 days....geez! Why is this such a hassle??

I assume that you are referring to the 2008 Homebuyer Credit Repayment found at Federal / Deductions & Credits / Your Home.

Are you continuing to make payments in repayment of the credit? If so, you should select Yes, and the home we received the credit for was still our main home on January 1, 2022.

However, if you selected Yes, but the home we received the credit for stopped being our main home on or before December 1, 2021, the software defaults to No, we never got this credit because the software presumes that the Homebuyer Credit repayment was resolved on the December 31 2021 or prior Federal tax return.

This TurboTax help explains

If you sell or stop using the home as your principal residence, the repayment of the credit is accelerated. In this case, you must increase your repayment in the year of sale or in the year that you stop using it as your primary residence.

Perhaps you have created IRS form 5405 in your tax return. In TurboTax Online, you are able to remove the form by:

 • Down the left side of the screen, click on Tax Tools.
 • Click on Tools.
 • Click on Delete a form.
 • Find the form listed and click Delete to the right.

However, if the form re-generates, that means that there is an entry in the software that needs to be removed or changed.

If this is the case, return back to the point in the software where the questions that populate the form are asked.

We'd love to help you complete your tax return, but need more information. Can you please clarify your question?

Did you get the Homebuyer Credit in 2008?

If yes, are you still in the house?

Are you getting error message that is keeping you from filing?

This is my case. On the screen that gives you 3 options: You took the credit and you are still in the house, or you took the credit and you are no longer in the house or no, you never took the credit. When we want to choose the 2nd option, it will not save it. It defaults to no, I never took the credit. This is super frustrating!
