Turbotax shows two versions of tax return filed and accepted. I am confused and need help

Three questions about using TurboTax please:

  1.  I only filed tax return(federal and state) once, but there are two versions submitted. Two big squares on the first page of Turbotax show that both were  accepted. What happens? Is it because I opened Turbotax twice and worked on them interchangeably and saved? So neither version is completely correct.
  2. I began to work on the amended return. One version of them appeared to ask me to make the necessary changes . Since I can only amend one version of them, what will happen to the other unchanged version after I filed the amended version?
  3. I began to work on the amendment to make necessary changes of the version allowed me to change. I mistakenly of using  save, not save as, when I worked on the changes. After completion to begin to file,  Turbotax  says it will file
  • state amended return and
  • Federal Form 1040 , but not Form 1040X, why? what can I do?

Thanks

1. I noticed the same thing. I think TurboTax checks e-file status by the name and Social Security number (or maybe just Social Security number), then it automatically marks any return with the same name and SSN as accepted, even though only one was actually filed.

You could not possibly have filed two copies of the return. The IRS will only accept one return for a particular SSN. Open the returns in TurboTax and look at the list of forms in forms mode. Only one of the returns will have a Postmark Report (the last form in the federal return). That's the one that was actually filed and the one that you should amend. The "accepted" notation on the other copy is just a result of TurboTax's imprecise checking mechanism.

Thank a lot for your prompt and expert reply . Your answer is most useful and resolves my questions. I couldn't say enough to express my appreciation of your help. I wish TurboTax could fix the misleading problem of double filing of returns or at least let the users know as you stated " Only one of the returns will have a Postmark Report (the last form in the federal return)"
