TurboTax says I need to upload a copy of my 1099-B because the IRS needs to see it. Hasn't my investment company already sent the IRS a copy?

Yes, your investment company likely sent a copy of your 1099-B to the IRS. However, TurboTax may still  need you to upload a copy for  verification purposes or to ensure all information is accurately reported.

  • TurboTax will prompt you to upload a PDF copy of your 1099-B if:
    • You've made adjustments to your investment income.
    • Your cost basis isn’t reported to the IRS.
  • If the 1099-B is not uploaded, TurboTax will need to generate Form 8453, and you'll need to mail a paper copy of your 1099-B along with Form 8453 to the IRS.
