TurboTax required me to fill a CF-1040 for a city I've never been to. When do people need to file a CF-1040 in Michigan? Can there be a case if I'm not a resident there?
The CF-1040 is a Michigan city common form for the cities of Albion, Grayling, Lansing, Portland,Battle Creek, Hamtramck, Lapeer, Saginaw, Big Rapids, Highland Park, Muskegon, Springfield, Flint, Ionia, Muskegon Heights, Walker,Grand Rapids Jackson and Pontiac.
This common form is used by all the cities mentioned for taxpayers who live or work there to report income, exemptions etc.
The form may be triggered in TurboTax if you have a W2, 1099 or other income document that has an employer/vendor using an address in any of those cities. Usually you have to check a box next to one of the cities in the list to get the CF-1040 for that city to activate. If you imported your W-2 that may have caused TurboTax to "pre-check" the box.
This form states "Every corporation doing business in the city and every other person having income taxable under this ordinance in any year ... shall make and file with the city an annual return for that year, on a form furnished or approved by the city, onor before the last day of the fourth month for the same calendar year, fiscal year, or other accounting period, that has been accepted by the internal revenue service for federal income tax purposes for the taxpayer."
If you have not completed your return and this form is generated in error, you can change this by going through the state section of TurboTax and continue until you get to the Live or Work in Any of These Cities? screen and uncheck the city that is being generated.
If this form has been generated and filed in error and your return has been e-filed and accepted, you may have to amend your return.
TurboTax will be ready to complete amendments after February 11th.

What if I need to uncheck that box but my taxes have already been approved? I don't pay city taxes. The physical address of my company is not in the city. The company doesn't even take out city taxes.
