TurboTax FREE EDITION says I must upgrade to the PREMIER version "due to the lifetime learning credit". That credit was last year, but not on this year's return. Why?

I have two sources of income (that total under $20k) and took the standard deduction. Why does such a simple return require an upgraded version of TurboTax?

If you no longer are claiming the Lifetime Learning Credit and your return is as simple as you say then you do not have to upgrade.  Let's remove that information from the return.

You should check your answers to interview questions because you must have answered yes to having a Form 1098T.

  1. Log back into your return
  2. On the left side choose Federal
  3. Select Deductions and Credits
  4. Scroll down to Scholarships and Tuition then Edit
  5. You can delete that information here.
