TurboTax Deluxe 2024 does not respond to the F8 key, and does not mark amounts as estimated.

I have verified that the F8 key does work using the website https://www.iobit.com/en/keyboard-test.php I'm using Windows 10 on a desktop computer. I have a basic desktop keyboard with function keys and no "Fn" key.

To mark something as estimated that needs to done when in Forms mode.  Click on Forms.  When in Forms mode open the tax form where you want to enter the amount.   Put the cursor in the box where you want to enter an amount and click on F8 and enter the amount.

Thanks for the quick reply.  Yes, F8 does work in Forms mode.  In Step-by-Step mode, the Edit menu shows a choice "Mark As Estimated F8".  This does mark the amount as estimated, but F8 in Step-by-Step mode does not work even though the menu item clearly shows "F8".  This is a bug and should be fixed.

Also, it would be VERY helpful in Step-by-Step mode if an estimated amount appeared in red text and/or italics as it does in Forms mode.  Otherwise it is not evident that the menu choice "Mark As Estimated F8"  (or "Unmark Estimated F8") actually worked since there is no indication on the screen.  I strongly recommend this as a software enhancement.

I'll pile on here too! The entire UIX is much slower in this version. Right-Click context menus are inoperable so quick MaE using context is missing. F8 can work but only when it feels like it. Likewise for selecting MaE in the Edit menu. MaE is completely missing from the recent 1099-B functionality update. MaE is unavailable using any method to mark regardless of whether using Step-by-Step or Forms.

This is what cheap outsourcing does to product quality!

It does not work for me on a Mac.  I've used a Mac with TT for 20+ years and never had this issue before.  MaE does not work in Forms or in Easy Step.  Boo hiss, Intuit!

it depends.  If you have an older mac or operating system, some keys functionality may have vanished. There are newer system requirements that may not be compatible with your system that may have worked in the past.

These are the minimum system requirements for TurboTax Desktop software for Mac, 2021–2024.

Operating system

  • 2024: macOS Ventura 13 or later
  • 2023: macOS Monterey 12 or later
  • 2022: macOS Big Sur 11 or later
  • 2021: macOS Catalina 10.15 or later

Hard drive space: 1 GB

RAM: 4 GB or more recommended

Internet connection: 1 Mbps modem (Broadband connection highly recommended). Required for product activation, software updates, and optional online features.

Monitor resolution: 1024×768 or higher recommended

Printer: Any Mac-compatible inkjet or laser printer (if you want to print your tax return or any tax forms)

Latest Update to 2024 Desktop has once again disabled the context menu feature and with it the MaE functionality in Step-by-Step UI. Context menu does work in Forms mode. Context menu works in other open apps so anomalous behavior is verified as isolated to TT SbS mode only. Interesting that it did work for a short period of time until this latest update. Seems like configuration control of the code base and UI operation are not being verified by the development staff any longer.

I also second @EricP5's motion to resume showing MaE values in red italic as part of the UI display. You know, just like they had been for the past umpteen years...

Sigh...
