TT says I have maxed out the $10,000 federal limit on state and local taxes, but I have entered less than $4,000...why does it think that is maxed out.

If you click on Forms in the upper right-hand corner, you will be able to view your Schedule A. If you are itemizing, it should be listed on the menu on the left-hand side, or you might have to click Open Form and type Schedule A into the search bar.

Line 5 will contain the information for State and Local taxes that are subject to the $10,000 limitation. Also, if you'd like more information about a certain line, you can right-click on the number, and click Data Source from the drop-down menu that appears. This should show you the worksheets/calculations that went into arriving at this number.

It also includes property taxes.

Thanks Sweetie, that is what has me confused. I live in South Dakota, which has no state tax, so the only taxes I entered were property taxes, and that amount was less than $4,000.  How can I be maxed out?

Thanks, that solved the problem for me.  It was state tax from the sale of a California house in 2017 that TT added automatically from last years taxes.
