TT is saying my 16 yr old daughter (high school student) who made $1992.60 and lived 100% of the time with me doesn't qualify as a dependent.

Yes, you may be able to claim your daughter as a qualifying child if:
  • He is under 19, or a full-time student and under 24 years of age. There is no age limit if he is permanently and totally disabled.
  • He lives with you for more than half of the year (Temporary absences, like going to college does not count)
  • You provided more than half of his support for the tax year
  • You are the only person claiming him
See the article below for the rules about claiming a qualifying child.

Here is a worksheet that will help you determine if you provide more than half of your daughter's support:

If it is stating that you cannot claim her you will want to review the dependent information to make sure that all of the information was entered correctly.

To review this information, follow the steps below:
  • Sign into your TurboTax online account
  • Click Take me to my return
  • Click the Personal Info tab
  • Click Edit next to the name of your dependent
  • You will then be asked a series of questions regarding your dependent.

I did her taxes on TT and made sure to mark that someone else was qualified and would be claiming her on their taxes as a dependent.

That's exactly how you should enter it on her return. Are you getting a rejection or is she not showing up as a dependent at all?

when I went back in and edited things again, more questions came up so perhaps I had marked a box incorrectly the first time through.
