If you change to head of house you should remain head of house for anything you will be filing.

When you fill out the Personal Info section of TurboTax, TurboTax will determine whether or not your situation qualifies for Head of Household. You can double-check your entries in this section to make sure that all of the information has been entered correctly. To do this, go to the Personal Info tab, then select Edit next to your dependent's name.

To qualify as Head of Household, you must meet the following requirements:

Pay for more than half of the household expenses
Be considered unmarried for the tax year, and
You must have a qualifying child or dependent.

You can find out more information about the requirements for filing as Head of Household here.

To qualify for Head of Household filing status, the following must apply:

  • The taxpayer must be unmarried as of December 31, 2019
  • The taxpayer must have provided more than half the cost of keeping a home. This includes rent/mortgage, taxes, utilities, meals, etc.
  • The home must have been the principal residence of a dependent child or other qualifying dependent relative

Guide to Filing Taxes as Head of Household

To review or change your filing status, click on My Info from the menu on the left. Next to the filing status, which should be listed under the taxpayer name and information, click Edit on the right. Review the questions on the screen to determine which filing status you may claim.
