Total Rip Off

The same thing has happened to me.  I have a simple tax, with a single W2 and no deductions.  But it says I have to upgrade to deluxe before I can file.  I am very frustrated.

Why You Might Be Charged

You might be charged for TurboTax if your tax situation requires forms or schedules that are not covered by the Free Edition. The Free Edition is only for simple Form 1040 returns without additional schedules, except for the Earned Income Tax Credit, Child Tax Credit, and student loan interest.

Steps to Switch Back to the Free Edition

  1. Open your return: Log in to TurboTax and open your current tax return.
  2. Switch Products: In the left menu, select "Switch Products". Choose "Downgrade" to switch to the Free Edition.
  3. Clear and Start Over: If you have already paid or registered, you can clear your return and start over:
    • Go to the left-side menu, select "Tax Tools," then "Clear & Start Over".
    • Confirm by selecting "Yes" in the pop-up

Forms Not Covered by Free Edition

  • Itemized deductions claimed on Schedule A (e.g., charitable contributions, medical expenses, mortgage interest, state and local tax deductions)
  • Unemployment income reported on a 1099-G
  • Business or 1099-NEC income (often reported by those who are self-employed, gig workers, or freelancers)
  • Stock sales (including crypto investments)
  • Income from rental property or property sales
  • Credits, deductions, and income reported on other forms or schedules
