Yes, you generally need to file two separate extensions: one for your federal taxes and one for your state taxes. Here’s how you can do it:

Federal Tax Extension

To file a federal tax extension, you need to submit Form 4868 to the IRS. This form gives you an automatic six-month extension to file your federal tax return

You can file this form directly through TurboTax:

State Tax Extension

Each state has its own requirements for filing a tax extension. Some states offer automatic extensions, while others require you to file a specific form

TurboTax can help you file state extensions directly within the software for many states:

If your state requires a specific form, TurboTax will guide you through the process or provide a link to the state’s tax authority website where you can file the extension

What state?  If you file Form 4868 with the IRS requesting a six-month extension of time to file your federal tax return by October 15, 2025, some state returns will be automatically extended as well.

Select your state from the list in the FAQ below to learn how to file your state extension.
