This year instead of just a W-2, I had a 1099 as well. At the very end it told me I had to pay for a $99 upgrade to continue/finish Why??

@sarahcatlett219  If you wish to enter information for certain 1099's you will have to upgrade to Deluxe, Premier, or Self-Employed. You will have to upgrade because your 1099 is not supported by the Federal Free Edition.  You can try to do the return via the IRS free site.  https://www.irs.gov/filing/irs-free-file-do-your-taxes-for-free

You can file with TurboTax Free Edition if you have a simple tax return.*

*A simple tax return is Form 1040 only.

Situations covered in TurboTax Free Edition include:

  • W-2 income
  • Limited interest and dividend income reported on a 1099-INT or 1099-DIV
  • Claiming the standard deduction
  • Earned Income Tax Credit (EIC)
  • Child tax credits
  • Student Loan Interest deduction

Situations not covered in TurboTax Free Edition include:

  • Itemized deductions
  • Unemployment income reported on a 1099-G
  • Business or 1099-NEC income
  • Stock sales
  • Rental property income
  • Credits, deductions and income reported on schedules 1-3
