The same W2 from the same employer has different box 16, 19, and 20

I got the same w2 from the same employer. The box 18 have different numbers in local wages, tips, etc. One box 19 is empty, the other has a number. They have the same box 20 in locality name. During turbotax review, Turbotax asked for removing one duplicate box 20. I directly imported W2 to Turbotax, so I am hesitate to delete one of them. What should I do?

Yes, delete one of them and then combine them.  It sounds like you received a W2-C?

If you directly imported them, you may need to write down the info first of the one you are deleting.  Unless you are in a state that files the local taxes with your state taxes or are itemizing the expenses, this will not have any affect on your return.

If one of the above do apply to you, then you would need to delete the one the is incorrect numbers and add the correct numbers.

This is not a W2-C. The two different numbers in box 18 and 19 and the same box 20 appear in W2-Copy 2 to be filed with employee’s City or Local Income authority. I lived in PA, working in one township and living in another township. Thanks!

If you received 2 W-2 for the same company and same amount of income but State and/or locality are different, you will enter just 1 W-2. If you imported it and the software added 2 W-2 you should delete one of them and combine Box 15-20. See image below for reference.

  • Make sure you have only 1 W-2 entered, then scroll down until you get to the section for State Taxes, and Local Taxes. Click Add another State, or Locality to enter the information from your 2nd W-2. Same rule applies if you have additional content for Box 12 and 14.

Just to be clear, there is only 1 W2.

Delete whichever information is blank or incorrect. It would make most sense to delete the one with box 19 empty as this will not at all affect your return.

Since you are in PA, your local taxes are not done through TurboTax, and unless you are itemizing and taking a deduction for the taxes paid locally, deleting the entire local boxes will not have an affect on your return. However, since box 19 is blank on the one line, it is not going to affect the itemized deductions either.
