The IRS has not processed my 2020 (paper) return? What steps do I need to take to file electronically this year . I don't want to wait on the IRS?

Can I file electronically this year while I wait on the IRS to process my 2020 return?     I "know" they received it, because they cashed my check.    However, because of tax law changes related to unemployment income, they now owe me money (which I suspect is the reason for the delay).

If your 2020 AGI does not work to let you e-file your 2021 return then try using "zero"---if zero will not work then your 2021 return will have to be printed, signed and mailed.

Thank you.  So, I may be stuck in an endless loop where the IRS never processes my return, then?  🙂

Question:  Is submitting the AGI just a final step in the process, or is it something I have to do along the way (I can't remember, I only do this once a year)?   I.e. Is it a question that TT will ask in the wrap-up phase?

If it won't accept either (my actual AGI, or $0/"zero"), then how do I file the paper return?   Will TT prevent me from finalizing my return if it won't accept my AGI?    (Example:  last year, I processed with TT, printed and mailed.   Will I still be able to do that, this year, even if there is an AGI "hang-up"?)

Thank you,

Follow the FILE steps and all will be revealed.

Start with the AGI you had on the original return you filed.

The IRS booklet on filing  2021 tax return will tell you where to mail your paper tax return.
