The amount that I received from the State of Michigan is different then the amount calculated on my return. How do I find out why?

My refund per my retund was $1,597; however, I only received $7.

It sounds to me your state applied your refund to a debt you owed them.  We called it a refund offset.

I will suggest you contact the Treasury Offset Program at 800-304-310 to find out if your refund was reduced because of an offset.  If this does not apply to you or you feel refund was reduced in error, call your state.  Click here: your state or IRS at  1-877-777-4778.

Here are the possible reasons when the offset is taken:

  • Past due child support;
  • Debts owed to a federal agency;
  • Unemployment debts owed to the state;
  • Past due federal student loans;
  • Unpaid state income tax.
