When inputting 1099 DIV that includes foreign dividends you get an input page "Tell us about your foreign dividends". It echoes the amount of foreign taxes you entered as paid on that account. It then asks you for "Foreign dividends received". Should you input the total foreign dividends received on that account or only the foreign dividends received on that account you paid taxes on?
They want all foreign dividends whether or not taxes were paid.
In the 1099-DIV section, you report the amount of Foreign Tax paid as shown on your form. The amount of Foreign Dividend Income (associated with this tax) should be on the supplemental info you get with your 1099-DIV.
If you want to claim a Foreign Tax Credit for tax paid on foreign dividends (as reported on your 1099-DIV), in the FTC section you enter the amount of foreign dividend income, and the tax paid on that dividend. If your 1099-DIV shows dividend income from several countries, you can combine the total into one country called 'RIC' (regulated investment company).
