Tax Year Prior to 2020: My IP pin provided by the IRS is 6 digits and NOT 5 digits long. I have the IRS letter in front of me. Turbo Tax only allows for 5 digits

Please advise

Make sure you are in the correct area to enter the IP Pin. It sounds like you are in the area for the regular e-file pin.

  1. Open your return in TurboTax, if you don't already have it open.
  2. In the search box, search for IP PIN or ip pin (2 words) in the search box and then click the "Jump to" link in the search results.
  3. TurboTax will take you to the Identity Protection PIN screen. Answering Yes will open a field where you can enter your 6-digit IP PIN.

Here's How to Enter Your IP PIN:

  1. Sign in to your TurboTax account
  2. Open or continue to your return if you don't already have it open
  3. In the search bar type IP pin (don't forget the space)
  4. Select the Jump to link in the search results
  5. On the Identity Protection PIN screen, answer Yes. Select Add and enter your IP PIN in the space provided
    • If you need to remove the IP PIN, select the trash icon
  6. Select Continue, then select Done

Here's more info on the IP PIN.

My search box does not work, for whatever reason. Frustrating... Is there another way to get to where I can enter the 6 digit IP PIN?

To enter, edit or delete a 6 digit IP PIN

Click on Federal Taxes (Personal using Home and Business)
Click on Other Tax Situations
Scroll down to Other Return Info
On Identity Protection PIN, click the start button

If you have a 6-digit IP PIN to enter, here's where to enter it.

  • FEDERAL TAXES tab
  • Then "Other Tax Situations."
  • Scroll down to "Other Return Info".
  • Find "Identity Protection PIN" and click START.

If you have a 6 digit PIN issued to you by the IRS you need to enter it in order to e-file.  Go to Federal>Other Tax Situations>Other Return Info>Identity Protection PIN and enter the six-digit PIN.
