tax return for a minor

My son earned just under $7000 working part time. He is 17 and in highschool.

He only had state taxes deducted - no federal.

When I put in all the info into turbo tax both federal and state say he qualifies for no refunds.

Do I still need to report via a income tax form being he is not entitled to a refund and earned less than $7000?

Is there a minimum he has to earn to be required to file taxes?

I would file for your son.  He may be due a state refund.  Did he make any cash charitable contributions?  He may be eligible for a small refund if he did.

I would file anyway.  It might be helpful in the future for school or other loans.  Be sure he indicates that he can be claimed by someone else.

@snodbusch  he is due zero refunds both from state and federal. He made no contributions to anything. Not sure what value there is to file.

@richlyntek   Did his state withholding cover the state tax due?  Or maybe he should be getting a refund for the state withholding?  Or what state tax did they take out?

He might need to file to report he doesn't owe anything.  Or the state might say he owes tax and not see the withholding.
