Tax return for 2018

I decided to see if my medical bills would allow me to itemize. It did not . Turbo Tax says I owe $38, 000. It won't allow me to go back and take the standard deduction. What do I do now? How do I take the standard deduction? Help!!

TT is smart enough to know whether to take the standard deduction or itemized based on your input.  You should not need to take out the medical bills to flip the result back to standard if you didn't qualify for itemized deductions.    Why do you think TT isn't crediting you with the standard deduction?

please go to Forms View and open up form 1040.

Look at line 8.  What number is there?  did TT take the standard or itemized? if itemized, why do you think it should be standard?  if standard, what is your concern?

TT is an intuitive software - just answer the questions and input your documents accurately and it will figure out the math and best course of action.
