Tax filing requirements for 16 year old with Roth IRA account and with Part time income

Folks,

MY Daughter has a part time job and has earned 2199 and we live in Texas and she also has Roth IRA account. Please note that I am claiming her as Dependent in my return. Can I file her taxes in her name OR I must include her income in my return? I would like to file her returns in her name separately.

Thanks

You don't include their income on your return. It would only go on their return if they are required to file one.  They don't have to file if they only have Social Security or W2 income under 12,550 but can file to get back any withholding taken out in boxes 2 or 17.  But you don't get boxes 4 or 6 back.   If they got a 1099NEC for it they do have to file a tax return for it.

Be sure on the dependent return you check the box that says you can be claimed on someone else’s return.  If their only income is W2 and under 12,550 they do not have to file a return except to get back any withholding taken out.

You are using the Desktop program?  This is important.  If you do another return for someone else like your child and their name is the same or similar to yours then it might overwrite your return.  You have to save each return with different names so you can tell them apart.  Like if your name is John and your son is also named John it will save them with the same name so the second one will overwrite the first return.  Go to File-SaveAs and give it a unique name.

Does she have any other income?

To determine if she has to file see https://www.irs.gov/help/ita/do-i-need-to-file-a-tax-return

She can file her tax return using her social security number.

To do so on the desktop version, when you first open Turbotax, click the I want to start a new return link.

Enter her Personal Info.  Be sure to click the appropriate box that she can be claimed as a dependent on your return.

Follow the conversation and prompts from there.

You cannot claim your daughter's income on your return even if you claim her as your dependent. She can contribute to her Roth IRA account as long as she has earned income. She does not need to enter the Roth IRA contribution in TurboTax either. If she has taxable income, she is required to file a return. If she is not required to file a return, she might need to file a return if there is income tax withheld from her paychecks.
