Switching 401 from Roth to Pre-tax

I made 401K contributions in 2024 as Roth and I am thinking to now make it as Pre-tax contribution now in 2025. Can I do that? I have not filed my returns yet.

You can't generally retroactively change Roth 401(k) contributions made in 2024 to pre-tax contributions for 2025. Contributions are locked in based on the year they were made

However, you can switch your future contributions to pre-tax for 2025. Here's how:

  1. Go online to your 401(k) account: Log in to your 401(k) account through your plan provider's website and update your contribution type to pre-tax.
  2. Contact your HR department: Reach out to your HR department and inform them of your decision to switch your contributions to pre-tax. They can help you update your payroll settings accordingly.

See IRS guidelines.
