State 1099G

Hello. The amount I received for my VA state refund in 2018 differs from the amount listed on the VA state 1099G (box 1) that I received in January. What can explain that difference? Thanks.

It depends.

Did you have refunds from other tax years refunded to you in 2019?

Or was there an amended return that resulted in another refund amount?

The 1099-G shows the amount actually paid to you during 2019.  If you have discrepancies that you are unable to reconcile, you can always contact the Virginia Dept of Revenue for clarification.

Thank you so much. I will check to see if there were other refunds (or, I will check with the state office). It looks as though I will be paying a federal tax on that refund (I had an itemized federal return). Moreover, it appears that if I had taken the standard deduction for 2018 instead of itemizing, I probably would have avoided paying that refund tax (even though itemizing lowered my taxable income by $113, it turns out I will be paying more than that with the tax on the refund).

Not necessarily.

Once you enter your information, TurboTax will determine based upon your input how much is taxable.

It could be fully taxable or maybe even partially taxable based upon how much the deduction affected your refund of tax liability.
