Spouse VAGI? Low Income Credit Worksheet - I can’t don’t have access to this info and I get proceed with e-filing

As I try to e-file it won’t let me complete the return bc it asks for this information which I don’t have and don’t know where to get it from. I know I don’t qualify for Low Income Credit so I don’t know why it’s forcing me to put this information. Also, I’m concerned about that random amount already populated for me. Please advise my spouse and I are separated and I’m filing Married Filing Separately.

If you can give more details, we'll try to help, since we can't see your return in the forum.  Where are you seeing the number that populated for you?  Did you transfer in your 2023 return when starting 2024?

If your filing as Married Filing Separately, you should only need to provide your spouse's basic info.  If you filed together last year, both of your AGI's will be on that return.  You could enter $0 for his AGI, and this won't prevent your Efile.

Thank you for responding promptly.. so, as I attempt to submit everything and e-file, I’m taken to this part which says that there’s something on my Virginia (VA) return needs attention, there’s no option to skip this. The amount populated for me is greater than my total AGI, that’s why I’m a bit concerned on what that means and where that amount came from.

Here is how Virginia calculates the Virginia AGI (VAGI), per the Virginia Department of Taxation:

  • Federal adjusted gross income (from your federal income tax return) + any required additions to income - your social security income and any allowable subtractions from income

You're VAGI will not match your Federal AGI if you have any additions or subtractions added to your Virginia Return during the interview process.  If your VAGI is showing hiring than what is listed on your federal return, recheck your entries for additions to income.

If you are "Married Filing Separate" and are not taking the Low Income Credit, you can enter the spouse's income as $0.  Virginia's requirement for the Low Income Credit for "Married Filing Separate" is only one spouse can claim the credit and if claiming the credit your spouses income must be included.
