Social Security Input error. Product will not accept input.

In trying to input my Social Security benefits, the program will not accept any input.  I have checked my information and everything is correct as far as I can see.  Last years benefit was all imported correctly but this years section will not let me input the information.  All other income was input as usual.

If I understand correctly:

  • Your information carried over correctly from 2020
  • All your other income entered with no problem
  • You are only having trouble with the Social Security

The steps to enter the Social Security are:

  1. Go to Wages & Income
  2. Scroll to Retirement Plans & Social Security
  3. Select Social Security = Start or Update
  4. Did you receive Social Security = Yes
  5. Tell us about the benefit you received = Be sure you select Social Security benefit = Continue

If you did not select Social Security benefit, you would not be able to enter any information.

I too am experiencing a problem with entering the amount of Social Security received.  I followed the instructions from the answer to the original question and still cannot input this data.  I was able to complete the other boxes on the form but cannot  for the amount received.  Please advise how to fix this.

After you check that it is Social Security, you enter:

  1. box 5- Net Benefits,
  2. Box 6  Federal tax withheld
  3. Medicare B, C, & D premiums
  4. Continue
  5. Done with entry
  6.

@mizscarlit Are you saying box 5 won't let you make an entry?

Seems to be a problem.

If you can't enter your Social Security in the boxes try deleting the form.  See employee John's answer

I read John's post and followed the steps.  It didn't help anything.  Amy, yes that is exactly what I'm saying ; it will not accept any entry.    To the other responder, what do you mean remove the form?  I'm following the interview  option, not filling out the forms.  At this rate I can't report the income from SSA.  It must be a glitch in the program.

Exactly!

I actually was able to enter the data by going directly to the form itself and returning to step by step .  Thank you everyone for your suggestions.

I tried your step by step suggestions but did not work. I still have the same problem. I've updated TT before working on my taxes and still get this problem. How can I proceed?

mizscarlit got it right...worked for me. Let me describe the process in a bit more detail. Go way up to the top left and click on the icon labeled "Forms". On the left is a list of forms. Click on "Social Sec" to get to the Social Security Benefits Worksheet. On line "A", double-click on the space below the label "Taxpayer". This brings up a small window where you can enter the benefits. Don't bother to itemize if there is more than one person involved, everything gets totaled together anyway, as you will see when you close the small window. At this point if the correct amount is showing under "Taxpayer" I recommend you first save the data, then click again on the icon at the top left to return to "EasyStep". Done.

I do not have 2020 information. Do I need that? I just want to input values.

Follow these instructions to Enter your Social Security income.

Forms SSA-1099, SSA-1099-SM, and SSA-1099-R-OP1 report retirement, disability, and survivor benefits from the Social Security Administration (SSA).

Don't confuse the SSA-1099 with the 1099-R that reports retirement benefits from non-SSA sources like pensions, 401(k)s, and IRAs. 1099-Rs are entered elsewhere in TurboTax.

All SSA-1099 forms get entered in the same place:

  1. Open (continue) your return in TurboTax, if it's not already open
  2. In the search bar, search for the term Social Security benefits and then select the Jump to link at the top of your search results
  3. On the screen Did you receive Social Security or Railroad Retirement benefits in 2021? answer Yes and select Continue
  4. On the next screen, check the box beside Social Security benefits (Form SSA-1099), then enter the amounts from your form(s) in the boxes provided
    • If you received multiple SSA-1099s, add up the amounts for each box and enter them together
    • Don't include SSA-1099s for dependents. Those should be reported on the dependent's return, but only if they are required to file a return (this is uncommon)
  5. Select Continue and follow the on-screen instructions

We'll calculate how much, if any, of your Social Security benefits are taxable. If your only income is from Social Security, you aren't required to file a return.

pension income no problem but when I get to Social Security benefit input, it will not allow me to enter anything. I have had no problem in the past.

This was a suggestion by our awesome Tax Champ @DoninGA and was successful.

See if this will help:

  1. Save your tax return.
  2. Close the TurboTax program.
  3. Right click on the TurboTax 2021 icon on your computer screen.
  4. Click on Run as Administrator
  5. Start the TurboTax program and continue your tax return.
  6. Search (upper right) ssa1099 > Click the Jump to ... Link
  7. Enter your information.

I am having the same problem. The program does not accept ANY amount in Box 5, even though the "Social Security benefits" box is selected

I had the same problem ... could not enter SS.  I realized that I had received 2 SSA forms because my benefit changed when I turned 70.  So I needed to add the amounts on the 2 forms together and enter the total amount manually into the form section.

Either close the program and restart it - then try to enter your SS income.   Or if you are using the Online software, close your browser window and re-open it in a different tab or try to sign in using a different browser.   @galka1

Where do I enter my 1099-SSA?
