Please help with a specific question on one part of a section -
In "Federal" - "Wages & Income" when you get to "Tell us about your refund" section
(To make it clear I am working on my 2022 tax yr return so I will use these years and I personally am only referring to state tax withholding in my case but I know it might refer to additional things for others)
- In the part called - "Total of all your payments and withholding" - is "withholding" referring to the state withholding from my 2022 or 2021 W2? I have seen answers that seem to refer to both years. Since the part about your refund right above the section in question says "Total Refund Received in 2022" (should mean received in 2022 for tax year 2021) and the section right below the section in question refers to "Tax Year of Refund (usually 2021) it would seem that the withholding info should be from my 2021 W2 - should it be from 2021 or 2022 W2? (FYI I live in New York)
Thank you very much in advance!!
I believe you are working on the section in TurboTax where the program is trying to determine if your state tax refund from the previous year (2021 in this case) is taxable on your federal tax return for the current year (2022.) TurboTax would need to know what your tax withholding was for 2021 to see if your state tax paid in that year factored into your itemized deductions for that year to determine if it is taxable in 2022. So, you would enter your tax withheld for 2021.
