Should I e-file another return if I suspect my return has been lost in the mail?

My 2020 return was mailed on March 8th 2021. The IRS web site shows no information available. I believe my return has been lost somewhere. Is it a good idea to just e-file another or would that create more problems?

For now, keep checking the IRS Where's My Refund page to see if they've received your income tax return and the status of your refund.

If you e-filed your 2020 income tax return, you won't be able to e-file another return. The IRS will reject it.

If you mailed in your tax return, no, don't e-file your return. That will just confuse the IRS and delay the processing of your return even more. The IRS has a backlog of income tax returns they are trying to process, so the reason the IRS has no record of your return may be due to the fact they haven't entered it into their system.

Per IRS, they have around 12 million tax returns that have been caught in a processing backlog created by the pandemic, which shut down the IRS for a time. Americans should see their refunds in the coming months. "We would hope to be through this backlog by the summer," said IRS Commissioner Charles Rettig.

  • The IRS also has millions of returns that have to be manually verified which is also causing a delay.
